“I truly believe that shallow water blackout is the leading cause of drowning for those who already know how to swim,” says Tom Griffiths, president of the State College, Pa.-based Aquatic Safety Research Group, who began warning of SWB dangers nearly 30 years ago and now advocates for signage preventing underwater breath-holding at every public and residential pool in the United States.
